My lil 10 year old boy is like his mama, loves history, science and reading. However he totally strikes out in math. They are moving at such a fast pace in his class that he hasn't fully grasped one subject and they're onto the next. This child can tell you more facts about world wars than most adults. He reads biographies "for fun". I got a phone call from his teacher that he was being defiant. Which astounded me because unlike me, Ben is very laid back and I cannot imagine him talking back to a teacher or being disruptive. Turns out he was READING instead of doing his math work, granted I get he should be working on what he is supposed to but he is GIVING UP in math. He doesn't understand it, he's had a tutor since the first week of school starting. My definition and the teachers on being defiant are quite different.. I've had meetings with the teachers and counselors and they keep saying well all Ben wants to do is read. LIKE ITS A BAD THING! My son came to me and said mom should I feel bad I am not good in math? It had me tearing up that my child feels inadequate over something that ,maybe if taught a different way, he may excel. This testing is just nonsense. Kids learn at different paces. The curriculum is so advanced as well. The guidance counselor said 2nd graders should know the multiplication table. I left his school shocked, frustrated and a LOT pissed off.. Something has to change with the public school systems."John J.
