1824

__________

Mexico passes a “free womb” law, to address slavery.

__________

Comparative sizes of France and the State of Texas.

January: Four Cherokee leaders travel to Washington to state their case. They have no desire to move west. Georgia representatives in Congress denounce President Monroe’s stance – that the Cherokees cannot be compelled to vacate their lands – as “dishonorable.”

“Any attempt to remove them by force would, in my opinion, be unjust,” Monroe warned. Still, if they insisted on continuing their communal way of life – that is a tribal way – only by removing them to “lands equally good, and perhaps more fertile” in the West could old ways be preserved. April: An agreement is reached with Russia, and the czar agrees to claim no lands farther south than 54' 60''.

MEXICO, newly freed from Spanish rule, opens the State of Tejas (Texas) to Anglo American settlers. Many bring in slaves and establish cotton plantations. This sets up a conflict with the Mexican government, which banned the importation of enslaved people the same year, on the principle of liberty for all. Many of the new settlers tried to get around the law, by having slaves classified as “indentured servants” for life.

“The state of Coahuila y Tejas responded by limiting indenture contracts to ten years, and guaranteeing liberty to the children of slaves, in a so-called ‘free womb’ law.”

“You infernal scoundrel.”

WINTER: William Crawford and the president have a scene – with the electoral count in doubt – in the winter of 1824.

According to one eyewitness:

Mr. C. then said in a very offensive manner, something like the following words – I  wish you would not dilly-dally about it any longer, but have some mind of your own and decide it so that I may not be tormented with your want of decision. Mr. M. surprised at his tone and what he said looked at him and demanded to know if he came there to treat him with disrespect. Mr. C. then raised his cane and said – you infernal scoundrel. Mr. M. seized the tongs and ordered him instantly to leave the room or he would chastise him and rung the bell for the servant. Mr. C. got up and moved towards the door of the room and when he had opened it turned around and said to him, you misunderstood me and I am sorry for what I said. Mr. M. said, well sir, if you are sorry let it pass. I think Mr. C. then asked him to shake hands with him in parting and he did so.

That was the last time Crawford ever visited the White House.

December 13: President Monroe suggests to Congress that Lafayette be granted relief from debt. He is awarded $200,000 and an entire township in the West.
